VENEZUELA,
1995
Nortech Surveys (Canada), Provided technical
support to a Solid State Geophysical 3D seismic
crew. Responsible for the static GPS control survey, differential
GPS/Altimeter production survey staking and access mapping.
Barometric altimeter modelling improved the accuracy of the
GPS elevations to a suitable survey specification. Duties
included survey management, logistics, data management, operator
supervision (in Spanish), client liaison (in Spanish).
ETHIOPIA
1993
Nortech Surveys (Canada) on a Western Geophysical
seismic crew in a hostile Somali occupied region of
Ethiopia, incorporated static and kinematic applications of
GPS.
In
addition to providing a control network for the seismic surveyors
I worked on applying Kinematic GPS to the acquisition of gravity
and magnetics data on a regional level, to optimize the design
of the seismic survey.
Conflict in the area, from the war between Ethiopia and Somalia
in the seventies to current tribal conflict amongst the Somalis,
has made the atmosphere one of anarchy and violence. I had
a number of encounters such as being kidnapped, involved in
a riot and gunfights, as I would travel in a single vehicle,
often in remote areas, ahead of the more controlled environment
of the seismic survey.

YEMEN,
1992
Nortech Surveys (Canada) Contracted to provide GPS
control on a seismic oil exploration project for CGG.
The survey included monumentation, project planning,
GPS operating, data processing, liaison with the client and
surveyors and producing the final report. |
